Ambient temperature is the air temperature of any object or environment where the equipment is stored. The adjective environmental means "relative to the immediate surroundings." Also known as ordinary temperature or reference temperature, this value is important for system design and thermal analysis.

In a computing context, maintaining a suitable ambient temperature is critical to the proper functioning and longevity of computing equipment. In general, a safe range is between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, although the colder end of that range is better. Ambient temperatures above these ranges make it difficult for a computer's cooling system to keep it at a safe operating temperature.

Measurement of ambient temperature
Measurement of the ambient temperature of a room or a component is accomplished through the use of a thermometer or sensor. To ensure the most accurate reading, the measuring device should be kept in the shade, in the middle of the room, and in a well-ventilated space that allows air to circulate freely. When measuring room temperature indoors, it is important to monitor temperature values throughout a day to determine the maximum and minimum room temperatures. When determining the ambient temperature of an outdoor environment, it may be helpful to refer to historical temperature averages.
