EPA Method 1667:
Formaldehyde, Isobutyraldehyde, and Furfural by Derivatization Followed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Summary:
For solid wastes or for aqueous wastes containing significant amounts of solid material, the aqueous phase, if any, is separated from the solid phase and stored for later analysis. If necessary, the particle size of the solids in the waste is reduced. The solid phase is extracted with an amount of extraction fluid equal to 20 times the weight of the solid phase. The extraction fluid employed is a function of the alkalinity of the solid phase of the waste. Following extraction, the aqueous extract is separated from the solid phase by filtration employing 0.6 to 0.9-?m glass-fiber filter.

Scope:
This method is for surveying and monitoring under the Clean Water Act. It is used to determine certain organic pollutants specific to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry (PMI) that can be derivatized and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
