EPA Method 1689:
Ammonia-N in Water and Biosolids by Ion-Selective Electrode Potentiometry with Preliminary Distillation

The ammonia in the sample is first separated by distillation, eliminating many potential interferences. The ammonia released is captured in a dilute sulfuric acid solution.

This method describes procedures for the determination of ammonia as N in drinking, ground, and surface water; domestic and industrial waste; and biosolids (municipal sewage sludge). Distillation of the ammonia from the sludge is followed by analysis using an ion-selective probe.
