EPA Method 218.4:
Hexavalent Chromium Using Chelation Extraction and AA. Official Name: Chromium, Hexavalent (AA, Chelation Extraction)

Summary:
Hexavalent chromium is chelated with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) and the chelated chromium is extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). The concentration of hexavalent chromium in the extract is measured using a flame atomic absorption (FLAA) spectrophotometer.

Scope:
This method determines dissolved hexavalent chromium in drinking waters, surface waters, saline waters, and certain domestic and industrial wastes.

Interferences:
Reactive metals. High concentrations of reactive elements, generally found in wastewater only, can interfere with analysis.
