EPA Method 8032A:
Acrylamide by Gas Chromatography

Summary:
Samples are first subjected to bromination, then are salted out, and extracted. The extract is cleaned up using a Florisil column before being analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and electron capture detection (ECD).

Scope:
This method determines trace amounts of acrylamide monomer in aqueous matrices. This method may also be applicable to other matrices and other similar analytes.

Citation:
SW-846 Online: Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods

Interferences:
No interference is observed from seawater or in the presence of 8% of ammonium ions derived from ammonium bromide. Impurities from potassium bromide are removed by the Florisil cleanup procedure.

QC Requirements:
Refer to Chapter One and Methods 8000, 3500, and 5000 for specific QC procedures. Procedures include: validation of sample preparation, introduction, and analysis, initial demonstration of capability, calibration verification, evaluation of retention times, analysis of method blanks, matrix spikes, duplicates, surrogates, and laboratory control samples.

Maximum Holding Time:
See SW-846 Chapter Four for information.

Media:
WATER

Subcategory:
Organic

Concentration:
0 - 5 ug/L.

Sample Prep:
Method 8032A

Precision:
Performance criteria is based on the recovery of acrylamide as 2,3-dibromopropionamide in river water. The mean recovery is calculated from the results of five replicate analyses, spiked with 0.2 ug acrylamide monomer.

Detection:
None.

Revision Number:
Revision 1, December 1996
