Environmental laboratory: environmental laboratories test for various chemical compounds within environmental samples, whether solid, liquid or gas and both organic or inorganic. Samples are generally taken by a field sampler who often works with an environmental consulting company. The consulting company usually needs to know whether or not their sample contains certain analytes (the substance(s) or chemical(s) that are to be analyzed for). Some examples include: doxins, furans, metals, PCBs, VOCs, PAHs, PPCPs, pesticides, among others.
Highly specialized equipment is used for environmental laboratory testing. Gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS) and liquid chromatography (LC) are common instruments used in environmental lab (analytical lab).
