TO-11A Formaldehyde Passive Badge Sampling

Formaldehyde may be sampled using a diffusive sampler for a period of eight to 24 hours and then analyzed by EPA Method TO-11A.

Note: Before sampling, check expiration date on outside of pouch. Do not use after the last day of the month indicated in the expiration date.

  • UMEx100 Passive Sampler for Formaldehyde (SKC part number
    500-100) in a zip lock pouch.
  • Small cooler and ice pack(s).

Formaldehyde Sampling Procedure

  1. Cut open the pouch, being careful not to damage the re-sealable zip lock on the pouch.
  2. Remove the sampler/badge. Do not discard the pouch. Store the pouch away from potential formaldehyde sources (i.e. place in cooler or back in freezer).
  3. Slide the green sampler cover to the “on” position to begin sampling.
  4. Enter the sample start time in the space provided on the back of the sampler.
  5. Hang the sampler in the sampling location.
  6. After sampling for the desired time (up to 24 hours), slide the green sampler cover to the “off” position to stop sampling. For indoor air sampling in non-industrial establishments, the minimum recommended sampling period is eight hours.
  7. Note the sample stop time in the space provided on the back of the sampler.
  8. Place the sampler in the original pouch and seal using the zip lock. Transport sampler in the sealed zip lock in the cooler with ice packs.
  9. Store the sampler in freezer/refrigerator until it is returned to the laboratory.
  10. Complete the enclosed chain of custody form. Be sure to note the sampling duration.

Sample Storage and Shipping

  • Store in a freezer before use and in freezer/refrigerator until it is returned to the laboratory.
  • Return the sampler in the cooler with frozen ice packs and chain of custody form to the laboratory by overnight courier. DO NOT ship to laboratory for delivery on Saturday or holidays.

The samples are analyzed using EPA Method TO-11A, modified for the sampling device by high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection.
