Shale is a sedimentary rock that is fine-grained. It has flakes of clay minerals and small fragments of other minerals, like calcite and quartz. Shale contains thin layering (bedding) called fissility. Shales are typically composed of variable amounts of clay minerals and quartz grains and the typical color is gray.
Shale is known for hiding natural gas deposits and people do 'fracking' to release the gas.
