Holding Times & Container Types

Samples are only representative of the area they were taken from for a specific length of time before sample preparation or analysis must begin. This is defined as the "holding time." Holding times may be measured in days, hours, or may not be applicable for those analyses that should begin as soon as possible after sampling. Each analytical method specifies its designated holding time. For certain tests, like those requiring organic extraction procedures, there may be a holding time limit before the extraction begins and after extraction before the sample analysis begins. All samples must be placed in appropriate containers and be appropriately preserved.

The following chart shows the appropriate container, preservation conditions, and holding time requirements for each of our tests.
